Steven C Opperman


Steven C. Opperman, 74, of Saint Marys, died suddenly at 2:03 P.M. Sunday, November 17, 20204, in the Emergency Department of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.

He was born October 3, 1950,in Lima,  the son of Myron and Henrietta (Egbert) Opperman.


He married Linda Axe on May 22, 1971, at Zion Lutheran Church in Saint Marys, and she survives.

He is also survived by his children: Sally (David) Schwab of Dublin, Ohio; Michael Opperman of Saint Marys; Benjamin (Jill) Opperman of Dublin. He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren: Makayla; Avery; Jocelyn; Haylee; Sophia; Kirstyn; Hayden; Gavin; and by his sister, Karla (Michael) Curta of Aurora, Colorado. He is survived by his mother-in-law, Lois Axe of Saint Marys.


He was preceded in death by his parents and by his father-in-law, Paul Axe.


Steve was a 1968 graduate of New Knoxville High School. He graduated from ITT Technical College in Dayton with a degree in civil engineering. Steve retired as the Superintendent of General Services for the City of Saint Marys. During his 35 year career there, he oversaw the development of K.C. Geiger Park, the covered bridge in Memorial Park, and the clock tower in the park. He also worked as a bus driver for Saint Marys City Schools for numerous years.


He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Saint Marys. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid fisherman. He traveled each year to Canada to fish and hunt. He liked to grow giant pumpkins in his garden and was a great woodworker. He loved watching the OSU Buckeyes and the Saint Marys Roughriders.


Funeral rites will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys, Pastor Bob Sweeney, officiant. Burial will follow at Resthaven  Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from noon until the time of services on Saturday at the funeral home, where, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Auglaize County Special Olympics.
