Mercer Health Medical Staff Awards Medical Student Scholarship

Mercer Health Medical Staff Awards Medical Student Scholarship

Mercer Health Medical Staff awarded its 2024 Mercer Health Medical Staff Scholarship to Bailey Stammen, an Ansonia High School and Wright State University graduate who is currently pursuing her Doctor of Medicine degree at the Boonshoft School of Medicine.

Stammen was selected as the scholarship recipient due to her dedication to health education and her understanding of the critical role it plays in managing chronic conditions. Her commitment to educating the community highlights the importance of empowering individuals with the knowledge they need to manage their health effectively.

“This passion for health education aligns with my vision of community involvement as a future physician,” states Stammen, whose goal is to return to the local area to practice. “Beyond providing medical care, I aspire to educate and empower patients to make informed decisions about their health. Whether it's through one-on-one interactions or broader community outreach, I want to bridge gaps in health literacy and ensure that patients have the tools and understanding to manage their health effectively.”

The Mercer Health Medical Student Scholarship program was initiated in 2020 and awards $2,000 annually to a medical school student who has shown a strong connection to Mercer Health or the surrounding communities. The scholarship is awarded for a one-year period and provided directly to the student.

“Supporting the next generation of medical professionals is a core value for us at Mercer Health,” said Dr. Stefanie Moeller, a Mercer Health internal medicine provider. “Rural hospitals are vital to our healthcare system, particularly in regions like west central Ohio. Our scholarship program aims to invest in students who are passionate about serving these communities, ensuring they have the resources and encouragement needed to succeed.”

To be considered for the scholarship, applicant must be a resident of the United States who is currently enrolled as a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year medical student in an accredited MD/DO school located in the United States. Applicant must either be a resident of Mercer County or one of the adjacent counties for at least 12 months prior to registering as a medical student or have participated in a rotation at Mercer Health. Applications for the 2025 scholarship will be accepted from September 1 to October 1, 2025. Applicants must apply online and submit transcript of their medical school courses/grades and a letter, on school letterhead, from the applicant’s medical school verifying that he/she is enrolled full time as a medical student at that institution.
