St. Marys swears in new police officer; solid waste committee to continue refuse rate discussion Feb. 2

St. Marys swears in new police officer; solid waste committee to continue refuse rate discussion Feb. 2

St. Marys Mayor Joe Hurlburt says city council had a brief agenda at its most recent meeting, highlighted by the swearing in of the city’s newest police officer.

Hurlburt said he administered the oath of office to Officer Julius Fisher, who recently completed four months of training at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus. Hurlburt said Fisher is a graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School and later attended Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and played football.

Hurlburt said Fisher’s addition brings the St. Marys Police Department back to full staffing.

Council also approved a liquor license transfer, which Hurlburt said passed without issue.

Hurlburt added that Councilman at Large Aaron Gilliland, chair of the city’s Solid Waste Committee, provided an update from the committee’s first meeting regarding possible refuse rate increases. Hurlburt said no decision was made, and the committee plans to meet again Monday, February 2, in Council Chambers to continue the discussion.

Hurlburt said no first, second, or third readings were brought before council, adding the meeting wrapped up after a short agenda.
