Firefighters from multiple departments battled a house fire Saturday night in the 200 block of North Main Street.

Mendon Fire Chief Darrell Etgen says crews were dispatched around 8 p.m. to a 2-story, wood-frame home. When firefighters arrived, they found a room-and-contents fire that had spread into another room, with flames venting through a north-facing window.

Firefighters were able to deploy hose lines and begin an interior attack. However, Etgen says crews initially had difficulty knocking down the fire after a rear door was opened while someone attempted to rescue a dog from inside the home.

Despite those challenges, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and eventually extinguish it.

Mutual aid was provided by the Rockford Community Fire Department and the Spencerville Invincible Fire Department. In total, about 5 fire apparatus and approximately 20 firefighters responded to the scene.

Etgen says it took about 2.5 hours to fully extinguish the fire. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced family.

No injuries were reported.
