St. Marys Mayor Joe Hurlburt says the city Solid Waste Committee met earlier this week for the second time to continue discussing possible changes to solid waste collection rates.

Hurlburt says the solid waste rate has not been raised in 26 years and currently stands at $9.95. He says committee chair Aaron Gilliland and Jim Crisman presented data to people who attended the meeting.

Topics discussed included what a new base rate could be, how large a senior discount might be, and whether there should be a surcharge for customers whose trash is collected outside the city limits.

Hurlburt says residents in attendance asked questions and shared ideas, but nothing was decided. He says the committee plans to review public comments and consider how those suggestions could be worked into any new rate plan.

The Solid Waste Committee is scheduled to meet again Tuesday, February 17 at 5:45 p.m. to discuss the rate study again.
