St. Marys Council Hears Mayor’s Annual Report, Begins Review of Solid Waste Rate Increase

St. Marys Council Hears Mayor’s Annual Report, Begins Review of Solid Waste Rate Increase

St. Marys City Council heard the mayor’s annual report, recognized a recent Chamber honor for the city, and began consideration of a revised solid waste rate increase during its latest meeting.

In his monthly report to council, Mayor Joe Hurlburt noted that the City of St. Marys received the 2025 Chamber Champion Award during last Thursday’s annual Chamber banquet. Hurlburt said the award recognizes the city’s strong working relationship with the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce and the support the city provides through meetings, events, Summerfest, and other activities held throughout the year.

Hurlburt also delivered his annual mayor’s report, highlighting projects completed by departments across the city. He thanked city personnel who were present in council chambers for the reading of the report.

The only new piece of legislation introduced during the meeting was an ordinance approving a revised rate increase for the city’s Solid Waste Department.

According to Hurlburt, the proposal received its first reading and must go through two more readings before final approval. He said the new rates would take effect 30 days after the final reading.

Under the proposed ordinance, regular residential trash service would increase to 28 dollars per month. Residents age 65 and older would pay a reduced rate of 20 dollars per month. Customers outside city limits who receive city trash service would pay 31 dollars per month, and any extra toter would cost 3 dollars and 50 cents.

Hurlburt said the ordinance will move to a second reading at the next council meeting.

Council members were also reminded of the Streets and Sidewalks Committee meeting scheduled for March 16th at 5:15 p.m. in council chambers.

At the end of the meeting, council entered executive session to discuss pending litigation. After returning from executive session, no resolutions were voted on and the meeting was adjourned.
