Poles down, road closed on State Route 274 after severe storms in Grand Lake region

Severe weather moved through Mercer and Auglaize counties Thursday night, prompting tornado warnings, producing hail, and leaving behind downed power lines, scattered damage, and power outages.

In Mercer County, officials are urging drivers to avoid State Route 274 west of Chickasaw. Multiple utility poles are down in the area, and a semi is reportedly wrapped around one of the poles. At this time, there are no confirmed reports of structural damage.

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office says State Route 274 is closed between State Route 716 and U.S. Route 127 due to power lines down. Motorists are asked to avoid the area while crews work to make repairs.

According to Mercer County EMA Director Chad Wilrath, several poles are down near Chickasaw, and there is damage to a barn roof along State Route 274 near the Mercer-Auglaize county line. Another barn was reported damaged about a mile west of 274 along the county line.

In Auglaize County, Sheriff Mike Vorhees reports the majority of the damage occurred in the southwestern portion of the county. Utility poles were knocked down from Tri Township Road to State Route 119 and along Mercer-Auglaize Line Road. Power outages were also reported in the Minster and New Bremen areas. No injuries have been reported.

Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson says additional damage includes several leaning or downed power poles stretching from the Mercer-Auglaize county line to the Shelby County line southeast of Minster. A few power lines were also reported down south of St. Marys.

The Celina Police Department reported power outages within the city during the storms.

Officials continue to assess damage across the region and are reminding residents to stay clear of downed power lines and use caution when traveling.
