Shelby County man killed by falling tree at his residence
SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio — A Houston-area man was killed by a falling tree on his property Thursday evening. First responders were called to the 4300 block of Russia Versailles Road in Loramie Township at 8:20 p.m.
According to a lieutenant from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, when deputies and emergency crews from the Houston Fire Department and Spirit EMS arrived, they found the victim, identified as 44-year-old Ryan Jourdan, next to a tree, face down, suffering from severe head trauma, and he didn't have a pulse.
The victim's wife told deputies Jourdan had been cutting down trees from the recent storms, and she became concerned when he hadn't returned to the residence. She asked a neighbor to help search for her husband, and he was located shortly thereafter.
Deputies said it appeared the tree, which was dead and about two feet wide, did not immediately fall when it was cut and slid off the stump. Jourdan may have been trying to run away from the falling tree when he was struck in the head.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office and the Shelby County Coroner's Office. The victim's body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office, where an autopsy will be performed.
