NWS: Severe Storms Possible Saturday Across the Region

The National Weather Service Northern Indiana office is monitoring the potential for severe thunderstorms across the region Saturday, with multiple rounds of storms possible.

According to a Friday morning briefing, thunderstorms are possible both Saturday morning and again during the afternoon and evening. Forecasters say confidence remains low regarding the exact timing and location of the strongest storms.

The area is under a Slight Risk for severe weather Saturday, according to the outlook included in the briefing.

The primary threat from any severe storms will be damaging winds, although flooding, hail and tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

The National Weather Service currently has medium confidence that severe storms will occur somewhere across the region Saturday. The best chances presently appear to be north of U.S. 24, although forecasters caution that could change.

Two rounds of storms are considered likely, with the strength and coverage of storms during the morning expected to play a role in determining the potential for additional severe weather later in the day.

Forecasters say Saturday’s heavier rain currently appears more likely farther north than the areas that have received the greatest rainfall totals this week.

Additional strong thunderstorms could also develop Sunday, particularly south of U.S. 24.

The National Weather Service is urging anyone with outdoor plans this weekend to remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
