Mercer County Engineer reminds candidates and supporters about roadside sign restrictions

CELINA — With election season approaching, the Mercer County Engineer’s Office is reminding candidates, campaign workers and supporters of ballot issues about Ohio restrictions on where signs may be placed.

Mercer County Engineer Jim Wiechart says Ohio law prohibits placing signs within the right-of-way of a public highway or attaching signs, posters or advertisements to trees or utility poles within the highway right-of-way. Signs placed in prohibited locations are subject to removal.

The restriction is contained in Ohio Revised Code Section 5589.33, which prohibits signs, posters and advertisements within public highway rights-of-way outside municipal corporations, including those attached to trees or utility poles.

Wiechart specifically reminded political candidates, campaign workers and supporters of issues appearing on the ballot to be aware of the law as campaign signs begin appearing around Mercer County.
