WCSM Opens “Back to School” Week at Minster Local Schools

WCSM began its weeklong “Back to School” series at Minster Local Schools on Monday, highlighting the district’s academic success, student programs and plans for the future.

WCSM’s Kevin Sandler hosted the opening-day broadcast and spoke with Superintendent Josh Meyer, grades seven through 12 Principal Austin Kaylor and K-through-six Principal Mandy Albers.

Meyer discussed Minster’s five-star rating on Ohio’s latest school report card. The district earned 29 of 30 possible component stars and recorded its highest performance index since 2014. He credited students, employees, families and community members for the achievement.

Meyer also discussed growing enrollment and the district’s land exchange with the Village of Minster. The agreement could provide space for future school expansion. A community forum and board work session will be held Wednesday, September 23, at 6 p.m. in the high school gymnasium to discuss the possibilities.

Kaylor highlighted new staff members, expanded course opportunities and programs that extend beyond academics and athletics. He also discussed the district’s Wildcat Values, which include responsibility, respect, gratitude, selflessness, perseverance, acceptance, humility and courage.

Band Director Jen Baer joined students Stella Moumal and Beckett Gubo to discuss the school’s instrumental music program and the lasting educational and personal benefits of participating in band.

Industrial arts instructor Marcus Heilman and students Brooke and Michael Wendelin discussed Minster’s BattleBots program. Students use computer-aided design, engineering and problem-solving skills to build robots for competition.

Albers highlighted elementary literacy efforts, student leadership opportunities and the Wildcat Way program, which encourages kindness, respect, responsibility, honesty and perseverance. She also discussed programs connecting younger students with high school students.
