Around 160 to 170 students from nine area schools got a firsthand look at modern manufacturing and potential career opportunities Tuesday during a Manufacturing Day event at Honda’s Anna Engine Plant.

Students from Anna, Lima Central Catholic, Lima Senior, Lima Shawnee, Minster, New Knoxville, Sidney, St. Henry and Tipp City participated in the event.

The program was part of Honda’s broader observance of National Manufacturing Day and Manufacturing Month.

Students toured the Anna facility and learned how advanced technology, automation and Honda associates work together throughout the manufacturing process.

The event also included several hands-on activities designed to introduce students to different aspects of manufacturing.

Activities included a “spot-the-defect” exercise similar to inspection processes used to ensure product quality, torque bolt races, a paint-matching game and a bolt-stacking activity highlighting assembly work.

Honda associates also spoke with students about their jobs, different areas of manufacturing and potential career paths within the industry.

While the event was hosted by Honda, the focus extended beyond careers with the automaker. Students also learned about manufacturing opportunities throughout Shelby County and the Miami Valley.

Representatives from area colleges were on hand to provide information about educational programs and career pathways that can prepare students for manufacturing careers.

Students were also introduced to technologies including virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

Associates from Honda’s Procurement and Supply Chain Center participated in Manufacturing Day activities for the first time this year, using an interactive demonstration to show how materials, parts and finished products move through the manufacturing process.

Inc., said in a statement. “By giving students a firsthand look at modern manufacturing, we help them see exciting career opportunities and reinforce Honda's commitment to developing a strong workforce in the communities where we operate.”

Tuesday’s event in Anna was the first of Honda’s Manufacturing Day events planned at 10 facilities across the country during October.

Honda expects more than 1,500 students and teachers from more than 50 schools to participate in events in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Honda has operated the Anna Engine Plant since 1985. The facility produces engines and other components for Honda and Acura vehicles.
