A Fort Recovery sophomore says 4-H has provided opportunities to explore new interests, develop leadership skills and build friendships beyond her community.

Claire Grube joined 4-H in third grade after watching her older brother participate. Now in her eighth year, she is a member of the Fort Pioneers 4-H Club and has completed projects ranging from baking and woodworking to welding and horses.

Grube said the wide selection of projects allows members to explore nearly any interest. Her yeast bread project advanced to the state level this year, even though she admits her baking skills remain a work in progress.

Her involvement has expanded beyond club projects. Grube serves as a 4-H camp counselor and a member of the Mercer County Junior Fair Board. She said the fair board helps with ribbons, planning and announcements while giving young people a voice in decisions that affect exhibitors.

Grube has also participated in state 4-H programs, including 4-HEA and the Teen Leadership Council. Those experiences have allowed her to meet members from across Ohio and learn how 4-H and county fairs differ around the state.

Her mother, Karen Grube, was also a 4-H member and now volunteers as an advisor. She said the program helped her form lifelong friendships and experience opportunities she might not otherwise have had while growing up on a farm.

Karen said she became an advisor to help ensure 4-H remains available for future generations. Advisors guide members, help families meet deadlines and connect young people with others who can assist with specialized projects.

She has also seen Claire grow more confident and willing to try new things through the program.

Claire balances 4-H with cheerleading, track, cross country and other school activities. She hopes to pursue additional leadership positions in her club and the Teen Leadership Council and is considering a future career as a nurse practitioner.

The Grubes encourage families considering 4-H to give it a try, noting that members can participate at a level that fits their interests and schedules.
