Union City woman indicted as adult in Mercer County assault case
CELINA — An 18-year-old Union City, Indiana, woman has been indicted as an adult following an alleged February altercation in Mercer County.
A Mercer County grand jury indicted Mylie S. Bocanegra on one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and one count of assault, a first-degree misdemeanor.
The indictment alleges Bocanegra knowingly caused serious physical harm to one victim and caused or attempted to cause physical harm to a second victim on February 22.
Court records show Bocanegra was 17 at the time of the alleged offenses. The case was initially filed in Mercer County Juvenile Court, where prosecutors requested that it be transferred to the adult criminal division.
During a June hearing, the juvenile court found probable cause to believe Bocanegra committed the alleged acts. An amenability hearing was later held September 28 to determine whether the case should remain in the juvenile system.
In its transfer order, the court said the first victim suffered a traumatic brain injury and the second victim also suffered physical harm. The court also considered testimony from a forensic psychologist who concluded Bocanegra was not amenable to treatment within the juvenile system.
Judge Matthew Gilmore ruled that there was insufficient time for rehabilitation through the juvenile system and transferred the case to Mercer County Common Pleas Court.
The adult indictment was filed October 15. The case remains pending, and Bocanegra is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
