Two Mercer County Democrats are urging voters to reject State Issue 3, saying the proposed constitutional amendment could create barriers for eligible Ohioans trying to vote.
Mercer County Democratic Party Chair Sophia Rodriguez and former elections official Deb Sneddon discussed their concerns during an appearance on WCSM’s Spectrum with Kevin Sandler.
Issue 3 will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot. The proposal would place a photo identification requirement for voting in the Ohio Constitution. Ohio already requires photo ID for most in-person voters under state law. ohiosos.gov
Rodriguez said she believes the amendment could make voting more difficult for groups including older adults, college students, people with limited resources and military members serving overseas.
“Voting should not be an obstacle for any eligible voter,” Rodriguez said. “Everyone has a right to vote, and everyone has a right to have their voice heard at the ballot box.”
Sneddon, who previously worked for the Mercer County Board of Elections, said she believes Ohio should focus on encouraging participation. She also pointed to election safeguards, including equipment testing and post-election audits.
Both guests expressed concern about how the proposal could affect absentee voting. Issue 3 does not eliminate voting by mail. The ballot language would require voters who do not vote in person to provide an approved photo ID unless state law allows them to verify their identity with a signature and another specified identifier. boe.ohio.gov
Supporters say placing the photo ID requirement in the constitution would protect it from being removed through ordinary legislation. A “no” vote would leave the current requirement in state law. Ohio House of Representatives
Rodriguez and Sneddon encouraged voters to read the ballot language and review arguments on both sides before making their decision.
